"How far you go in life depends on you being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant of the weak and the strong. Because someday in life you will have been all of these".

Understanding Poverty

Think about it: Every educated person is not rich, but almost every educated person has a job and a way out of poverty. So education is a fundamental solution to poverty.

Registers of Language: Barriers to impoverished students in public schools.

The casual register of language that children use creates a problem because it is different then the language we teach in, which is the formal register of language.  That is what frequently causes conflict.  We need to teacah then to tranlste from the casual rdgister of language to the formal esister o f language.  Formal language is the languagge of school and work.  Dasual is just tht .  It is also uses fewer words and may not include comleter sentences

How a Child Learns

How A Child Learns

If a child lives with criticism, he learns to condemn.
If a child lives with hostility, she learns to fight.
If a child lives with ridicule, he learns to be shy.
If a child lives with shame, she learns to feel guilty.
If a child lives with tolerance, he learns to be patient.
If a child lives with encouragement, she learns confidence.
If a child lives with praise, he learns to appreciate.
If a child lives with fairness, she learns justice.
If a child lives with security, he learns to have faith.
If a child lives with approval, she learns to like herself.
If a child lives with acceptance and friendship, he learns to find love in the world.
(Dorothy Law Nolte)
